Phromthep Cape is an amazing sunset, is that the island's most photographed
Phromthep Cape (Laem Phromthep)
Phromthep Cape is that the island's most photographed and perhaps known location. each evening, giant tour buses, scooters and private cars sweep through Rawai Beach and up the island's south hill so as to watch the sunset at its peak. On the highest of hill stands a busy lot where vehicles disgorge crowds of people from each corner of the world. Cameras flash, fingers purpose and lovers cuddle as Phuket's most lovely free show is re-enacted nightly – the sunset.
But is that this all there's to it? Hardly; Phromthep also has a tower that homes attention-grabbing historical maritime artifacts and commands spectacular views over the east and southeast of the island and its surroundings. The lighthouse/museum is air conditioned within and if you go up to the outside viewing balcony you can see the distinctive shapes of the phi phi Islands, Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi on a transparent day and of course an entire raft of nearer islands such as nearby Koh Kiaow with its Buddhist cloister.
The view from the cape is sort of a huge eternity pool from that you can mentally project the far-flung shores of sri lanka and also the Indian landmass. Some people create the rather exacting trek right down to the top of the cape’s foreland but most stay up within the viewing part for sunset. By the car park there's a handicrafts shop and a series of stalls that sell shells, snacks, sarongs, shawls, batik, toys and beachwear.
